Did you know that the Church used to use the pentagram? They used to mark shields, cloaks and other items with this symbol. Some sources have claimed that the knights of the Crusades wore pentagrams on garments and weapons or shields. This is because the pentagram is seen as a protective symbol.
From what I understand of history, those Knights of the Crusades were not a goodly bunch. They were blood thirsty rapists, murderers, torturers and thieves. When the Church could no longer control these savages, they sent them far away to ruin other nations' lives and peoples.
I have reason the believe the Church dropped its use of the pentagram around that time, allowing it to take on a negative meaning as they distanced themselves from their Knights. This made it a lot easier to claim people still using it for its original protective influences were evil or were witches doing the devil's works.
Witches and pagans often use this symbol, or wear a piece of jewelry that is fashioned into a pentagram. Even now, in 2013 there are those who see this as a sign of evil.
